Day Eleven - June 29, 2006

Well, I had a long day. I got up at 6:30, and stayed up. I had promised Leroy a trip to the river, and it looked like it was going to be hotter today. Yesterday was overcast and in the high 80s, while it was already clear by 7 a.m. today and forecast to hit the high 90s. So, since we were riding the bike (or rather, I was peddling Leroy and myself), I didn't want to be out after noon.

We got a good start before 9 a.m. and went to the Sacramento
water intake structure. There is a really great fractal fountain there. Leroy, who has issues about wearing wet clothes, took exception to my driving through the fountain and soaking us both. Since it was already in the 80s, I tried to console him with the thought that his shirt would soon be dry.

We then went back to Discovery Park which is the confluents of the Sacramento and American Rivers (or the American and Sacramento Rivers if you prefer). Most of the beach is on the American side which is much colder (Sierra snowmelt). It was too cold to swim in, but Leroy and I were wearing trunks, and I had him put on the life vests that are provided by the city. There are some nasty rip-tides there, and it would not be unheard of to be swept-off while wading. He was in heaven. There was a huge old elm that had died and was a "nurse" to newer saplings. It had these ENORMOUS exposed roots that made caves he hid in. Unfortunately, there was debris and trash around the beach, the tree, etc. Leroy did not want to leave, and tried to "hide" by hiking up the American a ways. I was not happy, but understood his desire to stay.

After that we went home, and took a quick trip to my work, as I searched desperately for our camera (which is currently missing). We came home again, then went to the library. Leroy then got a haircut. He is awful about having clippers ANYWHERE near him. We thought we found a solution with a kids' hair cut place that has videos, etc. to distract them, but Leroy was not buying it this time, and to top it off, the stylist nicked his ear (and drew a little blood). I was a little peeved, but given his squirming, it probably couldn't be helped. He wouldn't let her finish "cleaning up" the edges, so it's a little raggedy.

Tomorrow will be super busy with a work meeting for me, and family visiting. Wish me luck!
